Kotama and Academy Citadel is a 3D action Metroidvania game with an anime visual style. The player takes the role of Kotama, an exchange student at the Carmel Academy Citadel, a sci-fi academy city where strength rules above everything else. The goal is to fight rivals, explore the academy, and reach the title of Carmel Star.

The game has skill-based combat that relies on timing and control. The player can evade attacks quickly and hit Detonation Points on enemies to overpower them. Kotama also has a special ability called Fluid Detonation, which can change the direction of a battle instantly. Another ability called Mind Acceleration slows down time briefly, allowing the player to act during short windows. The player can also unlock various weapons and assign custom Memocards that provide bonus effects in combat.

The Carmel Academy Citadel is a large, connected area to explore. The player collects items, weapons, and upgrades while navigating the academy. Kotama also has fluid-based abilities that help in moving around and avoiding traps.

The story involves a century-old plan hidden inside the academy. Kotama has a special ability to rewind time, which is used to revisit earlier areas and find new paths. The player also meets students scattered across the citadel and can assist them to earn their support.

Kotama and Academy Citadel is a single-player game. It includes Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, and multiple difficulty options.
