Peaks of Yore: Alpinist Edition is a first-person climbing game set in 1887. You use your hands to grip rock holds and pull yourself up mountains. The physics make every move matter. One small mistake can send you falling a long way down. The mountains are not designed to be fair — they are simply dangerous.

The game takes place in a region called The Great Gales. You start from a cabin that serves as your base. As you climb more peaks, you collect trinkets to bring back and place inside it. You also meet other mountaineers along the way. The Official Ascension Society watches your progress and opens up new categories of climbing as you improve.

Not every rock hold works the same way. You have to learn by trying and failing. Some routes are harder than others, and new peaks bring new problems to solve. You can unlock climbing gear to help you reach the most dangerous summits. The game has many hours of content across boulders, peaks, and full mountains.

The visual style is inspired by 19th century mountain painting. You can play in a muted, classic look or switch on Colorful Mode for a brighter appearance. The quietude of the mountains is a big part of what the game offers. It is not loud or fast — it rewards patience and careful movement.

For players who want a bigger test, the game includes You Fall You Die and Free Solo modes. There is also a Peak Level Editor with full Steam Workshop support. You can build, edit, and share your own climbing levels with other players. This adds a large amount of extra content beyond the base game.
