The main game follows Zed, a zombie from the Netherworld, as he goes on a quest to destroy a God of Destruction. Zed starts at the lowest rung of the Netherworld and must fight his way up. He is joined by his sister Bieko, and together they meet many twisted and colourful Netherworld characters along the way.

The story of Disgaea 6 Complete connects a grim but touching tale with over-the-top tactical combat. Zed has a special ability called Super Reincarnation, which lets him come back and retry a battle after being defeated. This ability is new to the Disgaea series and was not present in earlier instalments. Players can use a wide variety of ally units in combat, and special attacks are a core part of the fighting.
