📚 The Darkest Tales Overview

The Darkest Tales is a single-player 2D action-adventure platformer with a dark fantasy tone. The player controls Teddy, a stuffed bear who sets out to rescue his owner, a girl named Alicia, from a nightmarish dream realm. Alicia has been trapped in a distorted version of familiar childhood fairy tale stories. Teddy must fight his way through these dark and twisted fairy tale locations to save her.

The weapon used by Teddy is built from a pair of scissors. He uses one blade as a melee weapon and the other as a bow. Needles serve as powerful arrows and also as grappling hooks for movement. This weapon set is the foundation of all combat in the game. Teddy gains experience by defeating monsters and can master and extend his skills over time. The combat involves cartoon violence.

The familiar characters players expect from classic fairy tales appear in the game, but in distorted and dangerous forms. Gingerbread men attack with violence, Sleeping Beauty is centuries behind on sleep, and the Little Mermaid resembles a sea witch. Players also face enemies like blood-thirsty rubber duckies and must explore locations like the giants’ castle in the clouds. The levels are set in recognisable but corrupted fairy tale locations, each with combat, obstacles, and secrets.

The Darkest Tales includes 41 achievements and supports Steam Trading Cards and Steam Cloud. It received a Metacritic score of 74 from critics. The game supports 10 languages including English, Russian, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Spanish (Latin America), and Portuguese (Brazil). Full audio is available in English and Russian. Two DLC items are sold separately: an Extended Edition and an Official Soundtrack. A Deluxe Edition bundle is also available that includes all three items together.
