📚 The Centennial Case : A Shijima Story Overview

The Centennial Case : A Shijima Story is a live-action mystery adventure game where the player takes on the role of Haruka Kagami, an up-and-coming mystery novelist. She visits the Shijima family and finds herself investigating four separate murder cases that took place across three different time periods — 1922, 1972, and 2022. The game was directed by Koichiro Ito and features live-action video footage shot like a traditional television drama, with real actors and physical sets. The Cinematographer and Scenario Director is Yasuhito Tachibana.

The Shijima family’s deaths are all connected to two things: a red camellia and a legendary object called the Fruit of Youth. A mysterious figure referred to as the Scarlet Camellia is believed to be behind all the murders, seeking the Fruit of Youth that the Shijima family allegedly possesses. In every time period, the same actors play different roles, so a character who is a victim in one era may appear as a suspect or another person entirely in a different era.

Every murder case in the game is divided into three phases. The first is the Incident phase, where the player watches the entire murder play out in live-action footage from start to end. All the clues needed to solve the case are hidden within the video itself. The second is the Reasoning phase, where the player assembles the clues and mysteries collected during the Incident phase to build a hypothesis inside a cognitive space. Multiple hypotheses can be constructed, but not all of them are correct, and some clues may deliberately send the player in the wrong direction.

The third is the Solution phase, where the player selects the correct hypothesis to identify the killer. If the correct culprit is confronted, they may try to argue against the player’s reasoning, requiring the player to counter with the right evidence. If the wrong hypothesis is selected, the player sees an incorrect ending and is then sent back to try again from the earlier phases.

The game includes a free playable demo on Steam covering the prologue tutorial and the first case set in 1922, up to the point where the mystery is solved. A separate free-to-download bonus film titled The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story Behind the Scenes contains interviews with the main cast and guest stars. A paid DLC also exists that upgrades all live-action video sections of the game to 4K ultra high definition.
