Terminator Salvation: The Video Game is a third person action shooter set during the war between humans and Skynet. Players control John Connor before he becomes the famous leader of the human resistance. The campaign follows his efforts to protect survivors while fighting powerful machines across ruined cities, damaged highways, abandoned buildings, factories, and military areas. During the mission, John and his team search for safe routes, rescue civilians, and stop dangerous Skynet forces before they destroy the remaining resistance.

Combat focuses on taking cover while using assault rifles, machine guns, shotguns, grenade launchers, and other military weapons. Enemy machines include T-600 units, Moto-Terminators, Hunter Killers, and other robotic forces sent by Skynet. Players move between cover positions to avoid heavy enemy fire while returning accurate attacks. Explosive barrels, damaged vehicles, and destroyed buildings provide temporary protection during firefights. Ammunition and weapons collected from battlefields help the resistance continue fighting during later missions.

The campaign can also be completed with another player in cooperative mode, allowing two resistance fighters to battle together across the main story. Several missions involve protecting friendly soldiers, escaping dangerous machine attacks, and clearing enemy controlled areas before moving forward. Large battlefields, ruined streets, underground passages, and industrial locations provide many combat situations during the campaign. The game combines military action, cover based shooting, teamwork, and the struggle for human survival while following John Connor during one of the most important periods of the war against Skynet.
