Surviving the Abyss is a colony simulation game set on the ocean floor during 1976. You manage a deep-sea research facility where scientists conduct genetic experiments and work to perfect human cloning during the cold war. The game takes place in complete darkness at the bottom of the ocean where survival is very difficult.

You must build and expand an underwater base while managing essential resources like oxygen, power, and food to keep your crew alive. The scientists need proper living conditions and research equipment to continue their work. You construct buildings for manufacturing, research, and life support while planning carefully to use limited space.

The ocean floor has uneven terrain that requires vertical construction and smart planning. You connect buildings with tunnels and powerlines to create an efficient facility. Mining operations gather resources needed for expansion and construction. Light is very important because darkness hides dangerous creatures that threaten the facility.

You build light pylons to push back the darkness and make safe areas where you can expand. Without light, the facility becomes vulnerable to unknown threats lurking in the dark waters. Submarines help explore distant areas and establish outposts to secure resources far from the main base.

The game includes an event system where you make important decisions that affect your crew. You must keep scientists sane and obedient while conducting research on local ocean wildlife. Advanced technologies can be researched to improve life and work in the facility. Power failures can cause disasters, so maintaining electricity and life support systems is critical for survival in this extreme underwater environment.
