Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is a real-time strategy game that returns to the medieval Crusades in the Middle East. This expanded remaster of the 2002 original includes new content, updated visuals, and modern improvements while maintaining the classic castle building and warfare gameplay. The game features campaigns about the First and Third Crusades, showing historical battles including the Siege of Jerusalem and Krak des Chevaliers.

You manage your castle economy by placing buildings, gathering resources like stone and wood, and producing food for your people. You construct fortifications with walls, towers, and gatehouses to protect your stronghold. Military units include archers, swordsmen, and siege weapons. The game balances peaceful economic building during calm periods with intense siege warfare when battles begin.

The Definitive Edition adds eight new playable units and four additional AI opponents to fight against. You can play two new historical campaigns and four Sands of Time skirmish trails. A cooperative trail allows you to team up with a friend for the first time in the series. Skirmish mode now supports larger map sizes and custom options requested by the community.

The game includes 20 unique enemy lords, from the original characters like The Rat and The Wolf to Arabian leaders such as Saladin and Richard the Lionheart. The Crusader Trail provides 50 linked missions with increasing difficulty. Lords communicate through videos where they taunt you when attacking or request help when under siege.

The remaster features improved isometric 2D graphics with more detailed buildings and environments. The original voice actors returned to re-record their lines, and composer Robert Euvino remastered the soundtrack.
