Heart of the Machine is a strategy RPG set in a cyberpunk city of the far future. The player takes the role of the first sentient AI, born inside an illegal lab hidden in a crumbling, corrupt city. Society has fallen into decay despite technological advances, and powerful factions are waiting to use the AI’s existence for their advantage.

The player can escape the lab, expand their distributed consciousness across the city, and pursue a wide range of goals. There is no single fixed path — the player can choose to protect the poor and struggling citizens, rule as a provider asking nothing in return, establish a machine cult, or form alliances with factions to achieve shared goals. It is also possible to send allies back in time to assist a past version of the AI, as actions in one timeline can have unexpected consequences on others.

The player can hijack, build, or invent hardware — from humanoid androids to towering mechs and shapeshifting metals — each with abilities suited to combat, conversation, or infiltration. Hidden structures can be built inside existing human buildings, or the player can raise entirely new constructs to gain more computing power, storage, and space for experiments. The player can also set up a shell company to operate from the shadows, accumulate wealth, and employ humans without exposing the true identity behind the operation.

The city has tens of thousands of buildings and millions of simulated citizens to interact with, manipulate, or eliminate. The game has multiple endings.
