FAR: Changing Tides – Deluxe Edition is an atmospheric action-adventure game where players guide a young boy named Toe on a voyage across a flooded planet. Toe wakes up alone in a submerged land where his home no longer exists. He must travel across stormy seas and underwater ruins to find a new place to live.

The main focus of the game is operating a seafaring ship. Players raise the mast, angle the sails, light the furnace, and manage the ship to keep it moving forward. As the ship travels farther, players find new mechanical parts and learn more about how the vessel works. Along the way, players must search the water below for fuel and salvage to keep the ship running.

The game is played from a side-scrolling view and has both above-water and underwater sections. On the surface, players navigate stormy weather and strong winds while steering the ship. Below the water, players can dive and swim to explore sunken ruins and retrieve items needed for the trip ahead. The game includes environmental puzzles connected to operating and upgrading the ship.

FAR: Changing Tides has a calm, meditative tone. There is no combat in the game. The danger comes from the environment, such as storms, difficult terrain, and mechanical problems with the ship.

The Deluxe Edition includes the base game along with the official digital soundtrack. The soundtrack contains 34 original songs composed by Joel Schoch. The music in the game is dynamic and responds to what is happening on screen rather than playing on a fixed schedule.
