Banquet for Fools is an open-world party-based action RPG set on the island of Invimona. A lord has sent four guards to investigate why all the inhabitants of one of his farm holds have completely disappeared. Players explore the island, visit towns, speak to farmers, scribes, and artisans, and work to uncover the mystery.

The player creates four companions and travels with a pack-boro animal that can carry a boat and extra items. The island has rivers and a sea that the party must hike and portage across. There is no auto-compass or quest log in Banquet for Fools, so players must navigate the island themselves using scrolls that contain requests and instructions.

Combat in Banquet for Fools is brawl-style and beat-em-up. When the action bar fills, players can pause and open a combat dome to select actions and targets. Players control one guard at a time while the others fight on their own. Players can switch leaders mid-fight or call in a support guard for combo attacks. A Rally attack option becomes available later, allowing multiple characters to strike at the same time.

Characters can be equipped with various skills including weapons, armor, pagan spells, animal binding, music abilities, and rogue skills. Pagan spells are split into three types: Fauna, Vines, and Spores. Players can also use Songs during combat that activate automatically based on battle conditions.

A field kit allows the party to produce arrows, rivi-wraps, and explosive globes while away from shops.
