Starship Troopers: Terran Command is a real-time strategy game set on Kwalasha, a desert planet where the population works in the mining industry. Arachnids have invaded Kwalasha, and players take command of the Mobile Infantry under Colonel Hawthorne to push them back. The game is set in the universe of the Starship Troopers film series and follows a military campaign across the planet’s terrain.

The game uses a True Line of Sight and True Line of Fire mechanic, which means units cannot shoot at enemies they cannot physically see. Arachnids can use this to hide in ambush positions, especially in lower elevations or behind obstacles. Players must position Mobile Infantry units on higher ground or in choke points to get a clear field of fire against the incoming Bug hordes.

The Mobile Infantry has several specialist unit types, and players must manage which units they bring to a mission. Rifle Troopers can use a shotgun ability to push back large numbers of Arachnids at close range. The M11 Marauder biped unit can fire a mortar barrage at distant targets. The Fleet Liaison is a support unit that can call reinforcement dropships or direct an airstrike to clear a large group of Arachnids in one strike.

Arachnid underground hives are a core part of the campaign. Bug nests are connected to tunnel openings on the surface, and Arachnid swarms can pour out of these tunnels at any point during a mission. Players must destroy the nests to permanently stop new Arachnids from appearing in a mission area.

Territory Mode is a separate mode from the main campaign and has 27 unique maps across the base game and its two DLC packs. In Territory Mode, players fight to control Territory Points that supply a steady flow of in-game resources. Three Battlegroups are available in this mode: The Ground Pounders from the base game, The Hell Raisers from the Raising Hell DLC, and The Peacekeepers from the Urban Onslaught DLC.
