Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is set in the Monster Hunter universe, where players take on the role of a Monster Rider. As the grandchild of Red, whose Monstie was Guardian Ratha, players embark on a journey to uncover the mystery behind the vanishing Rathalos worldwide. The story begins during a festival night in Mahana, the central village of Hakolo Island, where players meet Ena, a Wyverian girl who once knew Red.

Players leave the island with Ena to protect an egg entrusted to her by Guardian Ratha. The journey involves discovering the cause of environmental abnormalities as the egg hatches into a flightless Rathalos with small wings. This event sets the stage for players to form bonds with monsters, known as Monsties, which accompany them on their adventure. The game features a variety of monsters, including Brachydios, Seregios, Nargacuga, Tigrex, Zinogre, Kushala Daora, and Teostra.

Monster Dens randomly appear in the field, where players can find eggs to add new Monsties to their party. Rare dens occasionally appear, offering elusive monster eggs with hard-to-find genes. Once an egg is safely retrieved from a Monster Den, players can take it to the Stables to hatch a new Monstie. These Monsties possess special skills that can be performed while riding them, enhancing the player’s capabilities during their journey.

The game encourages players to explore and discover a diverse range of monsters inhabiting the world. As players progress, they can find more Monsties and expand their party.
