Alan Wake Remastered is a third-person action game where you play as Alan Wake, a famous writer who travels to the small town of Bright Falls with his wife Alice. After Alice goes missing, Alan finds pages of a horror story he has no memory of writing. The strange thing is, everything in those pages starts happening in real life around him.

The game is set in a dark forest environment with a strong horror tone. Alan must fight against shadowy enemies called the Taken. These are people and objects consumed by darkness. To defeat them, Alan first uses a flashlight to burn away the darkness surrounding them, then shoots them with a gun. This mechanic of using light as a weapon is central to the gameplay.

Alan Wake uses an episodic format, similar to a television series. The game is split into six episodes, and the story moves forward in a very cinematic style. Cut scenes and in-game events work together to keep the story moving in a strong direction.

The game includes collectible items such as manuscript pages, coffee thermos flasks, and radio and television broadcasts hidden across the map. These give more background to the story and the town of Bright Falls.

Alan Wake supports Steam Cloud and Steam Achievements. Players can save progress and continue from where they left off. The game also includes two additional downloadable episodes called The Signal and The Writer, which continue Alan’s story after the main game ends.
