Rising Sun: Iron Aces is set after the Second World War. Many ex-combatants, without a place to return, are recruited by a mercenary army. This army is led by former General Albert Hessler. He is a man without a nation and has only one objective: war. The United Nations responds by creating the Special Defense Unit (SDU) to counter Hessler’s ambitions.

The SDU forms a squad called VALKYRIAS. This squad consists of elite pilots tasked with stopping Hessler. Players can select from four pilots, each with a unique introductory level. The game offers 12 stages in story mode. It can be played solo or cooperatively. Players can choose from three difficulty levels.

Rising Sun: Iron Aces features nine aircraft to unlock and upgrade. The game includes four types of mechanics. Normal Mode uses traditional shoot ’em up mechanics. Boss Mode involves battles against heavily armoured enemies. Dogfight Mode employs shooter-on-rails mechanics. Attack Mode requires players to evade enemy attacks while flying to objectives.
